The house is one of very few properties in Polruan which is situated in a peaceful and idyllic location right on the water’s edge. A small passageway of winding steps next to the Waterfront Apartments, gives easy access to the patio and the house with its magnificent view across Fowey harbour. Polmarine is a boathouse originally dating from the early 18th Century, and is a small part of a large area of land containing several properties purchased from the Duchy of Cornwall by an eminent sea captain, who built a quay on the site. At the turn of this century it came into possession of the Bunt family and was named Bunt’s Yard. It was during this time that the property started to be divided. A family feud became so much that a set of steps down to the quay were divided in half so that the two feuding members did not have to use the same steps. Over recent years more small areas have been sold leaving, on the waters edge, a large boathouse and land known as Polmarine. Several people have owned the boathouse and over the many years a great number of boats have been housed and repaired here. Even until the early 1980’s light work was carried out by the Pickering family – who were the last to do so. Since then the property has undergone extensive renovation by the present owner John Barley, to make it into the magnificent house as it is today. |
