Polmarine - How to find us by road. Polruan is 4-5 hours drive from London or the Midlands. Then follow the Polruan signs very carefully but do not equate Fowey with Polruan or you will find yourself on the wrong side of the harbour! Towards the end of your journey, patience and persistence may be required, because as the lanes grow deeper and narrower, the bends also become more tortuous and the sea stays hidden until you have almost arrived! Visitors to Polmarine are advised to drive straight down Fore Street (which is the road on which you enter the village), and park temporarily at the bottom near the crossroads of East and West Street. West Street, on the left, is alarmingly narrow near the Russell Inn but the steps to Polmarine at the far end of the Waterfront Apartments are only 100 yards on the right. |

South of the village on the grassy slopes of the cliffs, past the Coastguard station, Polruan looks across vast seascapes extending nearly 50 miles, from Prawle Point past the Eddystone Light house off Plymouth in the east, to Black Head and the Manacles near the Lizard, in the west. Many scenic walks can be taken from Polruan, notably the Hall Walk starting along East Street via Pont and Bodinnick to Fowey, or sea view walks to Lantic bay or further on to Polperro, or even Looe. As well as acres of National Trust walks there are many pastimes to be enjoyed – fishing, golfing, riding, swimming and of course sailing. The Fowey river, harbour and the waters of St Austell Bay offer hours of sailing for the both the novice and the experienced yachtsman. Over 6,000 pleasure craft visit the harbour every year maintaining a continuous activity and providing a scene which is forever changing. Yachts, fishing boats, tugs and sailing boats all enjoy these waters and China Clay tankers pass through on their way to the ancient port of Fowey from all over the world. Although Polmarine only offers bed and breakfast, there are excellent lunchtime and evening meals to be had at the Lugger Inn on the quay or the Russell Inn in West Street, both situated in the heart of the village and offering an individual atmosphere of their own. Or take a short ride on the ferry across to Fowey where you will find an abundance of excellent shops and restaurants. General stores supply the everyday needs, whilst the local cafés serve morning coffee snacks/pasties and delicious cream teas. Polruan is central to the county of Cornwall and St Austell and the Eden project is only 6 miles away providing a direct rail route to London and the Midlands. Plymouth is 30 miles to the east, Truro is 20 miles to the west and the Cornish north coast is only 25 miles away. Polmarine tries to offer something for everyone. An active holiday if you want it, or just a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The choice is yours. The Daphne du Maurier Festival of Arts and Literature >>
